J.C. Penney and other chains are focusing on categories such as beauty, home and major appliances as changes in the apparel market continue to negatively affect top and bottom line performance. Purchases of apparel, which accounted for about five percent of consumer spending in 2000, fell to 3.3 percent by 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
